Quick answer: to be cited in Google AI Overviews or AI Mode, a page must first be indexed and eligible to show a snippet in Google Search. There is no separate submission or special markup. Pages that get cited tend to answer a specific question clearly near the top, cover the follow-up questions around it, show first-hand expertise, and are technically easy for Google to crawl and understand.
What AI Overviews and AI Mode are
AI Overviews are the AI-generated summaries that appear above the regular results for many searches, with links to the pages they draw from. AI Mode is a separate, chat-like search experience where people can ask longer questions and follow-ups, again with linked sources.
Both are built on Google Search. They are not a different index. That is the most important thing to understand, because it means the path to being cited runs through ordinary, solid SEO.
What Google itself says
Google's Search Central guidance on AI features is short and refreshingly direct:
- There are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, and no special optimization is needed beyond normal SEO best practices.
- To be shown as a supporting link, a page must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet.
- The usual preview controls apply.
nosnippet,data-nosnippet,max-snippetandnoindexlimit how your content can be used in these features. - Blocking Google-Extended in robots.txt does not remove you from Search or AI Overviews. It controls use of your content for some Gemini products, not Search.
In other words: if Google cannot crawl, index or snippet your page, it cannot cite it. If it can, the competition is about usefulness and trust.
How query fan-out changes the game
Google has described AI Mode as using a query fan-out technique. Instead of running one search, it breaks a question into related sub-questions, searches for each, and combines what it finds.
Ask "what is the best way to get more leads from a small business website" and the system may also look for form best practices, page speed, trust signals and call-to-action advice. A page that covers the main question and its natural follow-ups has more chances to be pulled in than a thin page that answers one narrow angle.

The citation checklist
1. Make the page technically eligible
- Indexed in Google (check with URL Inspection in Search Console).
- Not blocked by robots.txt,
noindexor a login wall. - Main content in HTML that Google can render, not only inside images or late-loading scripts.
- Fast and stable on mobile. See Core Web Vitals explained.
2. Lead with a direct answer
Put a two to three sentence answer to the page's main question right under the heading, then expand. Phrase subheadings the way people ask questions. This is the core of answer engine optimization and it is exactly the kind of passage an AI summary can lift.
3. Cover the follow-up questions
List the five to ten questions a real customer asks after the first one and answer each briefly on the same page, or link to a deeper page that does. FAQ sections, comparison tables and step lists are easy for both people and AI systems to use.
4. Show real expertise and experience
Name the author, link to an author page, and include details only someone who has done the work would know: what went wrong, what it cost in time, what you would do differently. Generic text that could appear on any site gives Google no reason to prefer yours.
5. Use structured data that matches the page
Organization, Person, Article, Product, LocalBusiness and FAQ markup help Google understand who is behind the content and what it covers. Only mark up what is visible on the page. Our guide to llms.txt, schema and entities walks through the essentials.
6. Keep facts current
AI features favor information that looks up to date. Show a "last updated" date and actually update the page when prices, laws, tools or processes change.
7. Build signals beyond your own site
Reviews, directory listings, mentions in industry articles and a complete Google Business Profile all strengthen the picture Google has of your business. This is the same entity work that helps you appear in ChatGPT and Perplexity, covered in our GEO guide.
How to measure it
| Signal | Where to find it |
|---|---|
| Impressions and clicks (AI features included, blended) | Google Search Console → Performance |
| Whether an AI Overview appears for your key queries | Manual checks in a private window, logged monthly |
| Which of your URLs are cited | Note the source links in the AI Overview or AI Mode answer |
| Traffic from other AI assistants | A custom GA4 channel, set up as in how to track AI search traffic in GA4 |
Common mistakes
- Rewriting every page into thin question-and-answer snippets with no depth
- Adding FAQ markup for questions that are not on the page
- Hiding the actual answer below long introductions or pop-ups
- Expecting a citation for queries where your page does not rank anywhere near the top results
Frequently asked questions
Do I need special schema to appear in AI Overviews?
No. Google says no special markup is required. Structured data still helps Google understand your content, but it is not a ticket into AI features.
Do AI Overviews reduce clicks to websites?
For some informational queries, yes, because the answer is visible right away. For complex or commercial questions, being one of the cited sources can still bring well-informed visitors. Focus on queries where your page offers something the summary cannot: tools, examples, pricing detail or a way to get help.
Can I opt out of AI Overviews?
You can limit what Google shows with nosnippet, max-snippet or data-nosnippet, but those also affect normal search snippets. Most businesses are better off aiming to be cited.
Is AI Mode available everywhere?
Google has been rolling it out by country and language over time. Check Google's announcements for your market, and optimize the same way regardless, since the underlying signals are shared with Search.
