Quick answer: generative engine optimization (GEO) is the practice of making your brand and content easy for AI systems like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot and Google AI Overviews to find, understand, trust and cite in their generated answers. It builds on SEO and focuses on clear, quotable answers, consistent facts about your business across the web, structured data, original information, and being mentioned by sources AI tools already trust.
Why GEO matters now
People increasingly ask AI tools questions they used to type into Google: "Which web designer in Malta is good for tour companies?" or "What is the best way to reduce cart abandonment?". The AI writes one answer, often naming a handful of brands and linking to a few sources.
If your business is not part of that answer, you are invisible in that conversation, even if you rank well in classic search. GEO is about earning a place in the answer.
How generative engines choose what to say
Most AI search experiences combine two things:
- What the model learned during training from a large amount of public text.
- What it retrieves live from a search index or the web when you ask (often called retrieval-augmented generation).
For retrieval, the AI tool searches, reads a set of pages, and writes a summary, citing some of them. To be cited, your page has to be retrievable (crawlable and indexed), relevant to the question, and easy to extract a clear answer from. To be mentioned without a link, your brand needs to be consistently described across many sources the model has seen.
What research says works
A 2023 research paper from Princeton University, Georgia Tech, the Allen Institute for AI and IIT Delhi, titled GEO: Generative Engine Optimization, tested how content changes affect visibility in AI-generated answers. Methods such as adding citations to credible sources, including relevant quotations and adding statistics improved visibility in their tests by up to around 40%, while keyword stuffing did not help.
The lesson is reassuring: what helps in AI search is mostly what helps readers. Be specific, back up claims and make your content easy to quote.

The GEO playbook
1. Make sure AI crawlers can read your site
Check robots.txt. Unless you have a reason to block them, allow search-related crawlers such as Googlebot, Bingbot, OAI-SearchBot (ChatGPT search), PerplexityBot and ClaudeBot. Keep important content in plain HTML, not only inside images or behind heavy JavaScript.
2. Get indexed in Bing as well as Google
Several AI tools rely partly on Bing's search index. Verify your site in Bing Webmaster Tools, submit your sitemap and consider IndexNow so new pages are discovered quickly.
3. Lead with the answer
Start key pages and articles with a direct two to three sentence answer to the main question, then expand. Use clear headings phrased like the questions people ask. This structure helps both featured snippets and AI summaries. Our AEO guide explains it in detail.
4. Be specific and quotable
Generic sentences like "We provide high-quality solutions" give an AI nothing to cite. Specific statements do: who you serve, where, what is included, how long it takes and what makes you different. Definitions, numbered steps, comparison tables and short summaries are especially easy to quote.
5. Add evidence
Cite credible sources, include real numbers you can stand behind, and share first-hand experience. Original data, such as a survey of your customers or results from your own work, is particularly valuable because nobody else has it.
6. Build a consistent entity
AI systems think in entities: people, organizations, places and things, with facts attached. Help them get your facts right:
- Use the same business name, description, location and contact details everywhere.
- Add Organization and Person schema with
sameAslinks to your official profiles. - Create a clear About page and author pages for the people behind the content.
- Keep profiles on LinkedIn, Google Business Profile, Crunchbase and industry directories complete and consistent.
Read the technical side in llms.txt, schema and entities.
7. Earn mentions on trusted sources
AI answers often draw on reviews, comparison articles, forums, directories and news. Being listed in respected directories, quoted in industry articles, reviewed on independent platforms and discussed in relevant communities increases the chance you are mentioned.
8. Keep content fresh
Update key pages with current information and show the date of the last update. AI tools try to answer with recent information, especially for fast-moving topics.
How to measure GEO
GEO measurement is still young, but you can track it in practical ways:
| What to track | How |
|---|---|
| Brand mentions in AI answers | Ask a fixed set of 20–30 customer questions in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Copilot every month and record who is mentioned |
| Citations of your pages | Note which of your URLs are linked as sources |
| AI referral traffic | In GA4, look for referrals from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com and copilot.microsoft.com |
| Accuracy | Check whether AI tools describe your services, prices and location correctly |
GEO mistakes to avoid
- Publishing large volumes of thin AI-written pages
- Hiding key facts in PDFs, images or pop-ups
- Inconsistent business details across profiles
- Blocking AI crawlers by accident through security plugins or CDN settings
- Expecting control: no one can force an AI model to recommend them
Frequently asked questions
Is GEO replacing SEO?
No. GEO builds on SEO. AI search tools rely on crawlable, well-structured, trusted pages, which is exactly what good SEO produces. Think of GEO as SEO extended to AI answers.
How long does GEO take to work?
Pages retrieved live by AI search can be cited soon after they are indexed. Changing how a model describes your brand from its training data takes longer, because it depends on future model updates and on mentions across the web.
Can I pay to appear in ChatGPT answers?
Organic AI answers cannot be bought. Some platforms are experimenting with ads, but those are separate from organic citations. GEO focuses on earning organic mentions.
What is the difference between GEO and AEO?
AEO (answer engine optimization) focuses on direct answers in search features like featured snippets and voice assistants. GEO focuses on AI-generated answers from tools like ChatGPT and Gemini. They overlap heavily. See SEO vs AEO vs GEO.
