Quick answer: answer engine optimization (AEO) is the practice of structuring content so search engines and AI assistants can extract a direct answer from it. In practice that means phrasing headings as real questions, answering each question in the first 40 to 60 words below it, using lists and tables for steps and comparisons, adding relevant schema markup, and building the topical authority that makes your answer the one worth showing.

What is an answer engine?

An answer engine responds to a question with an answer instead of a list of links. Examples include:

  • Featured snippets: the answer box at the top of some Google results
  • People Also Ask: expandable related questions in Google
  • Google AI Overviews: AI-generated summaries above the results
  • Voice assistants: Siri, Google Assistant and Alexa reading out one answer
  • AI chat search: ChatGPT, Perplexity, Copilot and Gemini

AEO increases the chance that your content becomes that answer, or one of the sources behind it.

Why AEO matters for small businesses

Answer features take up the most visible space on the results page, and in voice search there is only one answer. Being the source builds authority even when people do not click, and the visitors who do click tend to be well-informed and closer to a decision.

The AEO content formula

1. Use the question as the heading

Find the exact questions your customers ask, then use them as H2 or H3 headings: "How much does a website redesign cost?" rather than "Pricing considerations".

Good sources of questions: People Also Ask boxes, Google autocomplete, Search Console queries, sales calls, support emails and reviews.

2. Answer immediately

Directly below the heading, write a two to three sentence answer that makes sense on its own, ideally 40 to 60 words. Then expand with detail, examples and nuance.

Answer first, then explain. A reader skimming, a featured snippet and an AI summary all need the same thing: the answer in the first lines.

3. Match the format to the question

Question typeBest formatExample
What is / whyShort paragraph definition"What is CRO?"
How toNumbered steps"How to set up GA4"
Best / types / ideasBulleted list"Types of landing pages"
Compare / cost / specsTable"Shopify vs WooCommerce"

4. Cover the follow-up questions

Answer engines like content that covers a topic completely. After the main answer, address the next questions a person would ask. An FAQ section at the end of a page is a simple way to do this.

Schema markup for AEO

Structured data helps search engines understand what your content is. The most useful types for AEO are:

  • Article / BlogPosting with author and dates
  • FAQPage for question-and-answer sections
  • HowTo for step-by-step guides
  • Organization, Person and Service to describe who you are and what you offer
  • BreadcrumbList to show site structure

An honest note: since 2023, Google shows FAQ rich results mainly for well-known government and health websites, and HowTo rich results have been retired. The markup is still worth adding because it describes your content clearly to search engines and AI systems, but do not expect special visual results for it in Google.

Featured snippets usually come from pages that already rank on page one for the query. To win one:

  1. Find queries where you rank in positions 1 to 10 and a snippet exists.
  2. Look at the current snippet's format: paragraph, list or table.
  3. Add a better, clearer answer in the same format directly under a matching heading.
  4. Keep the answer concise, and let the rest of the page add depth.

Getting into Google AI Overviews

There is no special markup for AI Overviews. Google uses its normal search systems to choose sources, so the basics apply: rank well, answer clearly, show expertise and keep content accurate and current. Pages that combine a direct answer with original insight and evidence tend to be the most useful sources.

Voice queries are longer and more conversational: "Where can I get my laptop screen fixed near me today?". Write some answers in natural spoken language, make sure your Google Business Profile is complete for local queries, and keep your site fast on mobile.

AEO checklist

  1. List the 20 questions your customers ask most
  2. Map each question to one page (avoid answering the same question on several pages)
  3. Use the question as a heading
  4. Answer in 40–60 words immediately below
  5. Use lists, steps and tables where they fit
  6. Add an FAQ section for follow-up questions
  7. Add Article, FAQPage and Organization schema
  8. Show the author and the last updated date
  9. Link related answers together
  10. Review answers every six months for accuracy

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between AEO and SEO?

SEO aims to rank pages in search results. AEO aims to have your content used as the direct answer in featured snippets, voice results and AI summaries. AEO depends on good SEO, because answers are usually taken from pages that already rank.

Does FAQ schema still help?

It no longer produces FAQ rich results for most websites in Google, but it still describes your question-and-answer content clearly to search engines and AI systems. Only use it for real FAQs that are visible on the page.

Is AEO the same as GEO?

They overlap. AEO focuses on answer features in search and voice assistants, while GEO focuses on generative AI tools like ChatGPT and Gemini. Read SEO vs AEO vs GEO for a full comparison.
